Jefferson, WI- A near record forty nine drivers attempted to add their name to the list of winners during the Wisconsin State Championships Friday and Saturday night at Jefferson Speedway during BRP Big 8 Series presented by Gandrud Chevrolet competition. Another driving force in the way of Hurricane Ike pushed wet weather into the region, but the damp weather couldn't stop 2007 State Champion and 2008 track Champion Jason Erickson or 2007 Jefferson Speedway Champion Doug Hahn from recording the twin 50 feature wins while Steve Dobbratz was crowned the 2008 Wisconsin State Champion.
After a nearly two and a half hour track drying session with 94% humidity, the first of two fifty lap features took to the track with Ed Szelagowski, Jr and Jason Erickson bringing the field to green. Mechanical woes on the Szelagowski machine allowed Erickson the early lead with the likes of Ryan Carlson, Tim Sargent and Ross Kenseth in pursuit. Carlson was looking for a way past second place Sargent when he and Kenseth made contact out of turn four sending Carlson for a wild ride in front of the field, sending both prerace favorites to the tail for the restart. Nobody would have anything for the reigning champ in this race as Sargent, Kyle Jarlsberg, Steve Dobbratz and Michael Bilderback completed the top five.
The invert for the second feature was twelve, placing third generation racer Kenseth on the pole with second generation driver Skylar Holzhausen flanked to his outside. It was anything but a runaway for Kenseth who led the opening circuit as Holzhausen mounted an impressive challenge on the outside leading laps two through eight before the tail of his machine broke loose in the number three corner, making slight contact with the wall. Kenseth inherited the lead for the moment until a bobble out of turn two on lap fourteen allowed Doug Hahn the opening he needed to take command of the race. For the remainder of the event it was a two car breakaway with Kenseth pulling as far as Hahn's door but never completing the winning pass. Jon Reynolds, Jr, Brady Liddle and Casey Johnson recorded top five finishes. Dobbratz with his sixth place finish in the second feature coupled with his fourth place showing earlier in the evening was able to secure the Wisconsin State Championship.
The Big 8 Series Championship battle tightened as defending series Champion and current point leader Jeremy Miller saw his weekend turn dismal after his fast qualifying effort. Miller would finish twenty third in each feature after mechanical gremlins sidelined him in the first feature and a fuel leak ended his chances of a heroic comeback in the second feature. Meanwhile both Michael Bilderback and Ryan Carlson mounted solid runs. Bilderback now trails Miller by a mere eight points and Carlson finds himself sixty two points out of the top spot.
The next stop for the BRP Big 8 teams will be Saturday night September 27 for a one hundred and eight lap feature during the 43rd annual National Short Track Championships at Rockford Speedway. Both Miller and Carlson recorded wins during a twin feature format last season while Michael Bilderback found victory lane after a one hundred lap contest at Rockford this Spring. Racing action starts at 5:05PM. The BRP Big 8 Series presented by Gandrud CHevrolet Championship will be decided on Saturday October 4 at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway during the Oktoberfest Race Weekend.
